Fully Qualified Domain Name

Fully Qualified Domain Name

FQDN is sometimes referred to as an absolute domain name. This type of domain name specifies its exact location in the tree of hierarchy of the domain name system (DNS). All domain levels — including the top-level domain and the root zone — are available in an FQDN. Because it is so specific, this type of domain name can only be interpreted in a single way. Every FQDN is unique and directs to a single IP address.

An FQDN will look something like: mymail.example.com. In this example, “mymail” is the local hostname (which is an identity assigned to a device connected to a computer network). “example.com” is the parent domain name, noting the main site with which the FQDN is associated. Finally, the “.com” is the top-level domain, which denotes the name server on which a domain is located.
