Email Service Provider

What is an Email Service Provider?

Email Service Provider aka: email client, commercial email service provider. An ESP is a company or an organization that provides an internal mechanism to send, route, accept, and manage the receipt of email messages. The most common are those that provide this service to the general public for no charge. The most common are Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOL Mail. Other services are subscriber or member only. These generally belong to a business, college, university, professional organization or other private entity. These may also belong to a division of a much larger organization whose primary function is not email and are managed through the organizations internet service provider (ISP). These also frequently employ filters to prevent spam from entering their customers’ in-boxes.

About Commercial ESPs

A commercial ESP, sometimes referred to as an email newsletter service company, is a company which offers email marketing or bulk email services. These shouldn’t be confused with bulk email spam or the sending of unwanted or unsolicited bulk email of a marketing or otherwise nefarious nature. These companies include with their sending service,  a means in which to track the status (e.g., open, clicks, traffic reports, number of new subscriptions, or lists of users who unsubscribed) of all emails sent in a group to a specified list of recipients. These commercial ESPs also give the user features or control over the look and functionality of templates sent out, viability testing that gauges the spam score of an email or the statistical possibility of deliverability, the choice to send an HTML or plain text version of the message, and to personalize relevant content.

ESPs of both types typically have terms and conditions to include privacy, acceptable use policy and they work together with ISPs in order to ensure compliance with CAN SPAM and anti-abuse laws.

Types of Email Service Providers (ESP)

There are generally two types of ESPs:

  1. Free/Open to the general public
    1. The most common ESPs include Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOL Mail.
  2. Commercial Email Service Providers
    1. These are software platforms that provide commercial email marketing solutions for a subscription fee while some often have free plans.

  • Open rate
  • Number of clicks

  • Number of new subscriptions
  • Lists of users who unsubscribed

Commercial ESPs also tend to offer users control over the look and functionality of email templates, viability testing that gauges the spam score of an email or the statistical possibility of deliverability, the choice to send an HTML or plain text version of the message, as well as the ability to personalize content.
