This term preceded the now popular QR Code that is used for a variety of data sharing purposes. These codes consist of black and white geometric elements within a square or rectangular box. The information included in these new forms of bar codes contain encoded data that is used to share text, numeric data, or a hardlink which is coded within the matrix. Data Matrix’s uses and coding are guided by ISO/IEC standards and is in the public domain for many applications, which means it can be used royalty and license fee free.
