Meetup

Meetup is an online social networking portal that was inspired by the September 2001 attacks. Co-founder, Scott Heiferman, was impressed and motivated to create a place on the internet where people can get to know the people in their communities who share the same hobbies, interests, causes, politics, and activism. Heiferman stated publically that the way people in New York City came together in the days and weeks after this tragic event inspired him to make it easier for people to connect with others they didn’t know in their own communities.

Anyone can enter their zip code on the Meetup website and find people in their communities who share their love of their animal friends, interest in specific genres in music, books, movies, art, or healthy living modalities. The groups are only limited to the people who want to gather with like-minds, arrange an outing, or promote participation in local politics or advocacy.

As of April 2013, the company claimed to have 13.4 million members in 196 countries and 125,247 groups, some of which may include inactive groups/members.
