Flickr

Flickr is an image and video hosting web service that was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and one year later was acquired by Yahoo. This content sharing site is widely used by bloggers to host their images for creating slideshow presentations.

Yahoo reported that Flickr had a total of 51 million registered members and 80 million unique visitors by 2011 and that it was hosting more than 6 billion images.

Photos and videos can be accessed from Flickr without a registered account. However for users to upload images or video they must create an account. Registering an account also allows users to create a profile page that contains their photos and videos they have uploaded. Flickr also provides an official mobile app for iOS, Android, and Windows phones operating systems.

Flickr offers both free and pro accounts. Free account users are restricted to 300 MB for images and only two videos per month. There are other restrictions to include limiting the number of images that can be viewed on a profile page and if the account remains idle for more than 90-days, it could be deleted- at Flickr’s discretion.  Pro accounts allow users to upload an unlimited number of images and videos every month and receive unlimited bandwidth and storage. Pro account users also receive ad-free browsing and have access to account statistics.

Flickr offers users the ability to release their images under certain common usage licenses or label them as “all rights reserved” which primarily include the Creative Commons 2.0 attribution-based and minor content-control licenses.
